“What Makes a University Catholic?” by John Garvey with response by Mark W. Roche explores “[t]he blueprint for building a Catholic university” and its complexity. Garvey presents a foundation as it was laid out by John Paul II in the apostolic constitution Ex corde ecclesiae. Garvey points to what he calls the “kernel of the document” with respect to this topic, which states “that in order for a university to be Catholic, a majority of its faculty must be Catholic.” Roche’s response discusses his “struggles and strategies” when trying to hire outstanding Catholic faculty while he was dean at the University of Notre Dame.
